NOSCO is offering scholarships to eligible U.S. Navy family members on Okinawa with SOFA status. Scholarships are available to graduating high school seniors, continuing college students, and spouses. All scholarships will be awarded for an accredited college, university, or vocational/trade school studies.

How does NOSCO raise funds?
A percentage of the proceeds from the Navy Fleet Gift Shop Home Store and the Navy Fleet Kids' Cottage on Camp Lester supports NOSCO and the NOSCO Scholarship Fund throughout the year. The gift shops are non-profit businesses primarily staffed by volunteers. Once a year NOSCO hosts an Art Auction and all profits from this event go toward the NOSCO Scholarship Fund.

Who is eligible?
To be eligible, an applicant must:
A. Be an unmarried family member or a non-active duty spouse of a sponsor who is:

1. Active duty U.S. Navy personnel of any rank/rate assigned to Okinawa through the application deadline date (March 31, 2008);  or 
2. Retired U.S. Navy personnel living on Okinawa; or
3. Civilian personnel attached to the U.S. Navy and assigned to Okinawa through the application deadline date (Applicant must provide written affidavit from sponsor's CO stating that the sponsor is attached to the U.S. Navy); or
4. Deceased, but who met one of the above criteria prior to death.

B. Have current SOFA status if sponsor is on an accompanied tour.

C. Minimum 2.5 GPA.

D. Plans to attend a fully accredited two to four-year college, university, or vocational/trade school as a full-time student.

E. Military academy appointment or non-acceptance by a college, university, or vocational/trade program by July 31, 2008 will make the applicant ineligible.

Dependents of Marine, Army, Air Force or DoDDs sponsors are ineligible to apply.

What are the selection criteria?
Scholarship selection will encompass a variety of areas including academic merit, extracurricular activities, community service, letters of recommendation, and a personal letter. The scholarship will be awarded without regard to the gender, race, or creed of the applicant, school to attend (excluding military academies), and rate/rank of sponsor. The amount of the awards will be determined during the scholarship selection process.

What will the scholarship pay?
Successful applicants will be awarded scholarship funds to be used for tuition and fees at any college, university, or vocational/trade school of their choice. (No award will exceed the cost of one year's tuition.)

When is the application due?
Completed applications must be submitted to the Navy Fleet Gift Shop at Camp Lester no later than March 31, 2008. (No exceptions will be made.) Please plan for a minimum of two weeks to prepare your application in order to compile all the required information and materials.

When will the scholarships be awarded?
Applicants will be notified regarding the outcome of the selection process no later than May 1, 2008, and will be invited to an award reception. All monies are to be used for one academic year (fall 2008 through summer 2009).

When are the deadlines?
Application due: March 31, 2008
Copy of the bill and disbursement form due: No later than May 31, 2008
Scholarship distribution on: August 1, 2008
